Abstract. Principles of spectral interferometry are formulated, and mechanism of moiré fringe pattern formation is described for the case of a dispersive element introduced at the interferometer output. The dispersive element application is shown to expand dynamic range of fringe registration when zero path difference is searched for, and to simplify and accelerate the interferometer adjustment.
