Abstract. A new method is proposed for quantifying the wear of solids based on the acoustic emission phenomenon. The advantage of this method over others is that assessment of the amount of wear can be made directly in the friction of solids. The proposed method can be used to evaluate coatings of materials with thicknesses from units to several tens of microns. The performance of the method idea was tested on a titanium nitride coating on a titanium substrate.
