Abstract. The use of cost-effective materials in light of rising germanium prices is analyzed. The subject of the study is chalcogenide glass, using which the characteristics and wavelengths of glasses capable of replacing traditional germanium optics are considered. An example of using alternative glasses with an analysis of their advantages and disadvantages in the development of two-lens thermal imaging objectives is given. Alternative glasses adapt to various surfaces and show high efficiency in a wide range of wavelengths. This solution allows reducing the cost of producing thermal imaging systems without losing quality. The studies were conducted in the process of developing our own thermal imaging lens, the economic assessment was carried out on a wide list of manufacturers and suppliers of materials. The result, confirming the relevance of the work, is the transition to a similar lens using chalcogenide glass.
