Abstract. The problem of metal melting under exposure to ultra short laser pulses is considered. A modified vacancional model of melting is proposed. Analysis of laser-induced melting on the base of the model explains such peculiarities of the process as constancy of metal surface temperature and energy flux toward the front of melting with zero gradient of temperature across the melted layer.
Keywords: laser-induced melting, vacancional model of melting, ultra short laser pulse, numerical modeling.
