Abstract. Characteristics of spatial resolution of airborne hydrographic lidar system and decay of lidar return with depth are studied analytically for arbitrary volume scattering function (VSF) of the seawater in the frames of the small-angle scattering approximation for radiation transfer equation. Numerical analysis is performed for three types of the water with the use of measured Petzold VSF. Results are compared with calculations based on Dolin model phase function and diffusion small-angle approximation. Applicability of the models in various environmental conditions is discussed.
Keywords: airborne oceanographic lidar, spatial resolution, system attenuation coefficient, phase scattering function, small-angle scattering coefficient.
