Abstract. Methods of evaluation of basic parameters of optical system with variable magnification are considered as applied to replacement of actual system with an equivalent optical system of thin components. It is shown that knowledge of basic characteristics of the components makes it possible to calculate current values of their aberration parameters, to get an idea of variation of the system aberration properties, and therefore to asses the possibility of image improvement by alteration the basic parameters.
