Abstract. The effect of atmospheric turbulence on the RMS variation of pulsed signal time delay is considered. The variation is responsible for the root mean square error of pulsed laser rangefinder and therefore determines the potential accuracy of range measurement. The probability density function for the time delay values and the mathematical expectation of the root square variation of the laser pulse arrival time are evaluated.
