Abstract. Backward SRS conversion of laser pulses from diode-pumped passively Q-switched sub-nanosecond microchip laser is investigated experimentally. Backward SRS conversion efficiency above 50 % and pulse width compression coefficient of 6.4 are reported to be measured in BaNO3 crystal at kHz repetition rate. A scheme for additional amplification of the first Stokes component in the so-called “kegel” mode of microchip laser generation is proposed.
