Abstract. A description is given for a spherically symmetric distribution of refractive index in both spherical and Cartesian coordinate systems. Transformation of polynomial radial dependence of refractive index into Cartesian coordinate system is shown to enable calculations of aberration coefficients and computer modeling of optical elements with spherically symmetric gradient of refraction index.
