A technique of calculating reflected solar radiation magnitude of the International Space Station (ISS) is presented. The method is based on the use of the brightness factor as an optical characteristic of the light reflected by the station and description of the reflecting surface as a superposition of cylindrical, conical, spherical and flat elements. An algorithm and software for calculation of the ISS magnitude as a function of the station and observer orientation angles are developed. The results of calculation are compared with data obtained from the Internet and special measurements.

Resolution of spectrophotometer Cedar-M designed for analysis of wood species is considered. The possibility of improvement of the instrument resolution by variation of the diffraction lattice the operation area is demonstrated. A numerical method to calculate the intensity distribution over the circle of confusion and resolution of the spectrum analyzer with concave diffraction screen is presented.

A new method is proposed for measurement of sensitivity of optical detector to polarization of incident radiation. The method is based on harmonic analysis of output signal of the detector in “polarizer – discreet analyzer – detector” setup. The method accuracy is estimated with the use of digital modeling of the measurement errors. Results of experimental study of polarization sensitivity of silicon photodiodes and optical pyrometers are
presented.

Numerical modeling of integrating sphere is performed for the case of additional baffle introduced to prevent incidence of direct radiation from emitter positioned near the sphere center upon the measured sample (diffuse reflector). Results of calculation of irradiance distribution inside the sphere under examination are presented.

The problem of thermal stability of space-based telescope for remote sensing of the Earth is discussed. The concept of background temperature of the telescope pupil is introduced to characterize deviation of the instrument thermal regime from the initial value realized in the stand-by mode with closed pupil cap. A formula is derived to describe dependence of desired operating temperature of the lens hood on present background temperature at the entrance pupil of the telescope, and on the ratio of the lens hood length to the pupil diameter.
