Abstract.   Addition of bismuth fluoride BiF3 to ZBLAN fluoride glass with composition (53ZrF4—20BaF2—4LaF3—20NaF—3AlF3) is shown to lead to partial reduction of bismuth fluoride to luminescent subvalent bismuth compounds. The resulting glass is of high optical quality and demonstrates broadband luminescence in Near-IR (1000—1500 nm). The glass is reported to comprise a promising active media for broadband optical amplifiers and tunable lasers. The nature on near-infrared luminescent subvalent bismuth centers in ZBLAN glass is discussed.
Keywords: subvalent bismuth, luminescence, fluoride glasses, optical amplifier.
