Abstract. Analysis of experimental and qualitative theoretical studies of fundamental photochemical and photophysical processes in laser machining of glass-like ceramics is presented. Results related to glasses and glassceramics are compared to data on phase-change memory alloys. Controllable laser exposure can locally change the properties of the materials under consideration, e.g., its chemical solubility and transmittance in the visible and IR spectral ranges. In some cases, the process may be reversed, either thermally or by appropriately choosing the parameters of the laser exposure.
